Managed IT Solutions Guide

What is managed IT?

Managed services relate to the outsourcing of responsibilities for supporting and anticipating the need for a range of processes and functions with the intended goal of improving operations and reducing internal costs.

A managed service provider (MSP) delivers services, such as network, application, infrastructure and security, via ongoing support and regular administration on customers’ premises, or in a third-party data center.

The term MSP has been traditionally applied to infrastructure or endpoint-centered services but has expanded to include a wide range of services.

Common Managed IT Service Models

As more and more new services are being offered over time, the managed services market has become very diverse. These are the service models typically used and most common in practice among many service providers.

Outsourced Support

Outsourced support is often sought out by organizations with internal IT teams or an established provider that require additional services. These could include on-site field services to cover multiple locations, staff augmentation or remote help desk services.

Co-managed IT

Co-managed IT, as the name implies, involves the sharing of responsibilities for IT service management and support. This is typically between an internal IT department and a service provider, but responsibilities may also be shared among more than one service provider.

Fully managed IT

Fully managed is the complete outsourcing of most (if not all) of an organization’s IT to a service provider. The provider consults with the organization as an expert advisor, and acts on their behalf to procure, implement, deliver and support their IT services.
